About Waikato
| The Waikato Region features spectacular coastal and bush landscapes set amongst rich, productive farmland The Waikato is, for the most part, farming country. Drive through and you'll discover a lush, green landscape that is perfect for milking cows and breeding horses. There's more to the region however, like the mighty Waikato River that runs through Hamilton and the wild surf beaches of the west coast. Hamilton itself is New Zealand's fourth largest city – a university town and centre for scientific research – and only 90 minutes from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua. As Auckland becomes more expensive, Hamilton will become more and more popular as an affordable alternative. In fact, some people are already commuting to Auckland daily for work.
