About Southland
| The Southland Region features ever-changing vistas including the spectacular Fiordlands on the west coast Move to Southland and you can forget about traffic jams or over-crowding – on average there's only one person for every 30 hectares of land. The region is most famous for three reasons: Bluff oysters, people from Gore who roll their 'r' consonants and Milford Sound. Milford Sound is part of Fiordland – one of only two World Heritage Parks in New Zealand (the other is Tongariro National Park near Taupo). This is home to the Milford Track, a 53.5km walk that takes 4 days to complete. Should you ever go there it would be a good idea to take a jacket – with 6m of annual rainfall you're bound to get wet at some stage. The same warning can be applied Invercargill, the main city in Southland with around 50,000 residents. Many of these people are employed to service the region's farming community.
