About Nelson

The Nelson Region is known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand, and boasts a vibrant artistic community

Nelson sells itself on an irresistible blend of lifestyle and stunning landscape.

It shares many of the same characteristics as Marlborough – for example climate and scenery – but it has a much stronger tourist feel about it (especially in summer).

The local economy is based on four industries: seafood (Port Nelson is the biggest fishing port in Australasia), horticulture, tourism and forestry. Next to these, there are a number of growth industries, including aviation and engineering technology.

Nelson and neighbouring Richmond have a combined population of 55,000 people. You may well feel at home here since an increasing number of these are immigrants from the UK, Germany and United States.
